Rukmani gopalan gitanjali krishnan trust

By Madhura Bagchi

I was deeply moved by the determination of a 16-year-old girl, Trisha (name changed), who, at such a young age, had already grasped the harsh realities of life. During our counseling sessions, Trisha expressed a clear and resolute goal—she needed to start earning as soon as possible to fund her own education.
Despite having a supportive family, financial constraints made higher education seem like a distant dream. The urgency in her voice was unmistakable—if she didn’t secure an income soon, her family might arrange her marriage, effectively cutting short her aspirations. For families struggling to cover even basic daily expenses, investing in a girl’s education often takes a backseat.
When presented with options and guidance, Trisha was overwhelmed with gratitude. For the first time, she saw a path forward—a chance to shape her own future rather than be shaped by circumstances.

The Challenge: Barriers to Education and Employment

The statistics paint a stark picture:

• Education: According to a 2021 UNESCO report, only 74% of girls in India complete primary education, and the number drops to 42% for secondary education.
• Early Marriage: UNICEF reports that 27% of Indian girls are married before the age of 18, severely limiting their opportunities for education and independence.
• Employment: The International Labour Organization (ILO) states that women’s labor force participation in India is only 20.3%, among the lowest in the world.
These challenges are deeply interconnected. Without education, employment opportunities remain scarce. Without financial independence, early marriage becomes a likely outcome.

Employment: A Catalyst for Change

Gaining employment is more than just earning a livelihood—it is the foundation of empowerment. When women enter the workforce, they not only achieve financial independence but also contribute to social progress and economic growth.

The Impact of Employment
• Financial Independence: Studies show that employed women are 78% more likely to have a say in household decisions.
• Economic Growth: A 10% increase in women’s labor force participation could boost India’s GDP by 1.4%(McKinsey Global Institute, 2020).

Tackling Early Marriage and Enabling Personal Growth

In many communities, early marriage is still seen as a practical solution to financial struggles. Yet, this practice robs young girls of opportunities for education, personal development, and self-reliance.

Key Interventions:
• Creating Safe Spaces: According to Save the Children, girls with access to safe spaces are 60% more likely to continue their education.
• Building Trust and Awareness: Encouraging critical thinking about the future helps girls see possibilities beyond traditional expectations.

The Power of Role Models

Strong female role models can inspire and empower young girls facing societal and financial pressures. Seeing women who have overcome similar challenges gives them the courage to dream bigger.

Connecting with Role Models:
• Mentorship Programs: Research by Plan International (2019) shows that girls who regularly engage with role models are 55% more likely to pursue higher education.

Guidance: A Game Changer for Underprivileged Girls

For many young girls, especially in conservative communities, career guidance is a foreign concept. Simply knowing that alternatives exist can be life-changing.

The Impact of Career Guidance:
• Girls who receive career counseling are 70% more likely to make informed career choices (Center for Global Development).

Conclusion: Creating a Future of Possibilities

By addressing these challenges—through education, employment, role models, and guidance—we can help underprivileged girls take control of their destinies. Empowering just one girl creates a ripple effect that uplifts entire families and communities.

Together, we can ensure that every girl gets the opportunity to reach her full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
